Wot Spot?

So far, the books I have read are recommending siting ones hive in:

  • "dappled shade"
  • facing the rising sun
  • with an adequate flight path for the bees to fly in and out without disturbing folks
  • away from washing lines (as bees poop and drop pollen and generally make a mess of your (and your neighbors sheets)
  • away from areas where people play/walk
  • away from boundaries where your bees may be affected by spray drift from your neighbors
..and a bunch of other, sometimes contradictory recommendations.

In an effort to make a best guess as to the most appropriate location for my hive on our property, I've gone completely overboard in trying to figure out, or at least provide others with, the best/most information about where to put things.

So, starting with house plans - we have an official(ish) marking of boundaries, where North is, and through the magic of image manipulation programs, I can drop in not only wee shapes (in various, delightful shades of green) to indicate the trees bordering our property, but also (in red) my best guesses as potential sites for the hive.

Next, I visited the local councils GIS site, and Google Maps as I figure that actual aerial photographs would show surrounding trees, neighbors properties and shadowing details etc. This may or may not be useful, but it's easy information

Finally, I really got stupid and setup a couple of web cameras which recorded an image once every minute for a 24 hour period. These images were then stitched together into a 30 fps time lapse. Again, it may not be useful in determining the suitability of a site, the intention was to show lighting at each of the proposed locations. These videos are embedded below.
